FRIEDRICH VORWERK signs contract with transmission system operator Amprion for the A-Nord underground cable route and thus enters the next project phase for the realisation of the new high-voltage line

Tostedt, 10 October 2022 – Friedrich Vorwerk Group SE (ISIN DE000A255F11), a leading supplier in the field of energy infrastructure, reaches another important milestone with its subsidiary Bohlen & Doyen on the way to the realisation of the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) connection A-Nord. The integrated project execution (IPA) contract between transmission system operator Amprion, Bohlen & Doyen and seven other partner companies marks the start of the second and now exclusive project phase for A-Nord, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2023.

In the second project phase, the reference construction scope and the associated reference costs are to be determined. In the event of a successful agreement as well as a subsequent commissioning of the next project phase by Amprion, the total contract volume for the parties involved is expected to be in the range of €850 million to €1,100 million, in which Bohlen & Doyen would have a share of at least 30%. In addition to the civil engineering work, including the construction of the protective pipe systems required for the underground cables along the 300 km long route, the project scope also includes the parallel construction of the offshore grid connection systems BorWin4 and DolWin 4 over a distance of about 100 km.

The A-Nord HVDC connection line planned by the transmission system operator Amprion is considered one of the main arteries of the clean energy transition in Germany. The underground cable line will transport the rapidly growing wind power from the North Sea to the large consumer centers in North Rhine-Westphalia. This additional transport capacity is urgently needed, as electricity consumption is expected to double by 2045 against the backdrop of greater electrification in the German energy market. The current Grid Development Plan 2035 (2021) Electricity therefore envisages an investment volume of up to € 79 billion in the planning period, a large part of which is earmarked for the expansion of north-south transmission capacity through new underground high-voltage lines. Due to its broad performance and technology portfolio as well as decades of experience in underground cable construction, FRIEDRICH VORWERK expects demand in this area to grow strongly in the future.
