Factors that make it difficult for competitors to enter a market mean enormous power for any company that's already there. Typically, with power comes profit.

Illumina (NASDAQ: ILMN) has established one of the most powerful moats in recent memory. A maker of equipment and tools for genetic sequencing, the company has rewarded investors handsomely since its July 2000 IPO.
