Stock investors haven't enjoyed September and October, as extreme volatility has brought major-market benchmarks to their weakest levels in months. Declines for the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) were the most extreme, but even the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) and S 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) didn't fare very well.
