Stocks began August on a optimistic note, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) finishing at a record high and the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) closing up, but just short of a record.

Financial stocks and utilities were strong today. The Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEMKT: XLF) rose 0.7% and the Utilities Select SPDR ETF (NYSEMKT: XLU) gained 0.6%.
