U.S. military accelerates New MRAP programme
08:23 GMT, January 13, 2009 As was written about at BNET Government the U.S. military has accelerated the programme with a new generation of MRAP vehicles that will be lighter and more maneuverable for use in Afghanistan.
Blasts from roadside bombs are the leading cause of combat deaths in Iraq and have become a growing threat in Afghanistan. Therefore, the Pentagon has been seeking to replace and refurbish its military trucks like the Humvee, and reassessing what types of vehicles it needs as it further engages in operations in countries like Afghanistan.
The initial bids are required in January of next year, and like the recent JLTV award, there will be two teams delivering prototypes for testing prior to a decision to award the full up production contract.
The Business Journal of Milwaukee writes that Oshkosh submitted its proposal on 9 January for the program. Oshkosh along with BAE, Navistar and Force Protection would seem to be the main contenders for the program. The MRAP-All Terrain Vehicle programme will be managed like the recent JLTV award for multiple development contracts with a test and evaluation program for different vehicles. More than one successful design may be awarded production contracts as the program goes.
The Oshkosh-based company's submittal is based on its Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) chassis, which has been operating off road in Afghanistan as well as around the world for several years (see: http://www.defpro.com/news/details/4800/). Oshkosh first fielded the MTVR nearly 10 years ago as a next-generation replacement for the medium tactical fleet for the Marine Corps.
MRAP vehicles have been used effectively over the last three years in Iraq and Afghanistan to defeat the IED threat. They tend to be large, heavy vehicles that work best on improved surfaces. The MRAP-All Terrain Vehicle will improve off-road and rough terrain performance.
"The Oshkosh Defense M-ATV is a variant of our armored MTVR, a proven vehicle that has protected and served our military men and women in off-road operations for years," said John Stoddart, Oshkosh Corp. executive vice president and president, Defense.
