Over more than a year, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have been applying tariffs back and forth, starting with Trump's duties on solar panels and washing machines in January 2018. Since then, the tariffs have ramped up significantly. In August, Trump ordered U.S. companies to "immediately start looking for an alternative to China" after Xi threatened to impose duties on $75 billion worth of U.S. goods.
