Better Buy: Brookfield Infrastructure Partners vs. Kinder Morgan

Both Kinder Morgan (NYSE: KMI) and Brookfield Infrastructure (NYSE: BIP) (NYSE: BIPC) look like attractive options for income-seeking investors. While Kinder Morgan's performance this year was hit by the effects of COVID-19, Brookfield Infrastructure's earnings were far more resilient. But Kinder Morgan currently offers a yield that's nearly double that of Brookfield Infrastructure. So should you go for Brookfield Infrastructure for its resilience or collect Kinder Morgan's 8% yield? Let's examine the factors you should consider before deciding which one to buy.

Kinder Morgan is a diversified energy midstream company with operations across oil, gas, and natural gas liquids. However, Brookfield Infrastructure is far more diversified than Kinder Morgan. Its assets span utilities, transport infrastructure (including rails, roads, and ports), energy infrastructure, and data infrastructure. Utilities and transport each contribute roughly one-third to Brookfield Infrastructure's cash flows.
