FTC Stops Schick Owner Edgewell From Buying Harry's: What's Next?

The Federal Trade Commission has blocked Schick razor-owner Edgewell Personal Care's (NYSE: EPC) $1.4 billion bid acquire the growing upstart brand Harry's, saying that the smaller company serves an important competitive role in the market and helps keeps pricing in check.

Unilever (NYSE: UL) was allowed to acquire the arguably more prominent DTC razor brand Dollar Shave Club in 2016 because it has maintained its position as an online-only brand. Harry's, by contrast, started off as a DTC brand, but expanded into brick-and-mortar retail, and now generates half of its sales through retail partnerships with Target and Walmart.
