How To Use The FTSE 100 Stocks List To Find Investment Ideas

Having a database of all the stocks in the FTSE 100 Index along with relevant investing metrics can be very useful.

This resource becomes even more powerful when combined with a working knowledge of how to use Microsoft Excel.

With that in mind, this section will demonstrate how to implement three actionable investing screens to the FTSE 100 Stocks List.

The first screen that we’ll implement is for dividend-paying constituents of the FTSE 100 Index.

Screen 1: Dividend-Paying FTSE 100 Constituents

Step 1: Download the FTSE 100 Stocks List by clicking here.

Step 2: Click the filter icon at the top of the dividend yield column, as shown below.

Step 3: Change the filter setting to “Greater Than” and input 0 into the field beside it. This will filter for FTSE 100 stocks with dividend yields above 0% – in other words, the members of the FTSE 100 Index that actually pay dividends to their shareholders.

The remaining stocks in this spreadsheet are members of the FTSE 100 Index that pay dividends. The next screen that we’ll demonstrate how to implement is for stocks with market capitalization above $10 billion and returns on equity above 15%.

Screen 2: Large Market Capitalization, High Returns on Equity

Step 1: Download the FTSE 100 Stocks List by clicking here.

Step 2: Click on the filter icon at the top of the market capitalization column, as shown below.

Step 3: Change the filter setting to “Greater Than” and input 10 into the field beside it, as shown below. This will filter for FTSE 100 stocks with market capitalizations greater than $10 billion.

Step 4: Exit out of the filter window (by clicking the exit button, not by clicking the “Clear Filter” button in the bottom right corner). Then, click the filter icon at the top of the return on equity column, as shown below.

Step 5: Change the filter setting to “Greater Than” and input 0.15 into the field beside it. This will filter for FTSE 100 stocks with returns on equity exceeding 15%.

Close out of this final filter window. The remaining stocks in this Excel sheet are FTSE 100 stocks with market capitalizations above $10 billion and returns on equities above 15%.

Screen 3: Mid-Capitalization Value Stocks

Step 4: Close out of the filter window (by clicking the exit button, not by clicking the “Clear Filter” button in the bottom right corner). Then, click the filter button at the top of the market capitalization column, as shown below.

Step 5: Change the filter setting to “Greater Than” and input 2 into the field beside it, as shown below.

Step 6: Change the secondary filter setting to “Less Than” and input 10 into the field beside it, as shown below.

The remaining stocks in this Excel sheet are members of the FTSE 100 Index with market capitalizations between $2 billion and $10 billion that have price-to-earnings ratios no higher than 15.
