The stock market shook off the tragic news of a mass shooting in Las Vegas, and opened the fourth quarter with solid gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) and the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) both closed at record highs.

Small-cap stocks led the market upward; the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSEMKT: IWM) gained 1.2%. Health care stocks were strong too, and the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEMKT: XLV) closed up 1%.
