Your 2025 Social Security COLA Could Be Bigger Than Your 2024 Increase. Here's Why That's Bad News for Retirees.


We're still four months away from the big Social Security announcement that millions of Americans anxiously await. But it's not too soon to begin reading the signs to mentally prepare for what could be in store.

I'm referring, of course, to the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), announced in mid-October each year. The COLA for 2024 fell significantly to 3.2% from 8.7% in the previous year. However, the 2025 COLA could be bigger than the 2024 increase.

Is that good news for retirees? I don't think so. Here's why it could instead be bad news.
